Guided Biofilm Therapy in Valparaiso, IN
We don’t just clean your teeth. We find the bacteria causing the problem.
At Dunes Dental Studio, every hygiene visit includes EMS AIRFLOW® Guided Biofilm Therapy, or GBT for short. We’re officially GBT certified, and it’s simply how we do hygiene here. It isn’t an upgrade, and there’s no extra charge for it.
First, What Is Biofilm?
Biofilm is the sticky, bacteria-filled film that builds up on your teeth and along your gumline. It plays a big role in cavities, gingivitis, and periodontal (gum) disease.
The tricky part? It’s hard to see. Without a little help, biofilm can hide in plain sight, even from a trained eye.
What Is Guided Biofilm Therapy?
GBT is an evidence-based, minimally invasive approach to professional dental hygiene. Instead of a traditional “cleaning,” it focuses on finding biofilm and removing it, so we’re treating the actual cause of many common dental problems.
It’s a mix of technology and clinical skill. Not just a fancy polishing system.
What Happens During Your GBT Visit?
- We make the biofilm visible. A disclosing solution colors the biofilm so your hygienist can see exactly where it’s hiding. (You can see it too.)
- We gently wash it away with AIRFLOW. EMS AIRFLOW technology uses warm water and a specialized powder to lift biofilm off your teeth and along your gums.
- We remove hardened buildup when needed. If there’s calculus (tartar), we use EMS PIEZON ultrasonic technology to gently remove it. Its precise vibrations help break up buildup while keeping your comfort in mind. We focus on the areas that need it, so your cleaning is tailored to your individual needs.
Why Your Hygiene Visit Feels Different
- More comfortable. Warm water and gentle AIRFLOW technology can make hygiene appointments much more comfortable, especially if traditional scraping bothers your teeth.
- More thorough. Because we can see where biofilm is hiding, we target it directly instead of relying only on what’s visible.
- Minimally invasive. GBT is designed to remove biofilm effectively while staying gentle on your teeth and gums.
- Personalized. Your care is tailored to your mouth, whether your gums are healthy or you’re dealing with gingivitis, gum disease, implants, or orthodontics.
- Preventive. Better biofilm control is a key part of preventing cavities and gum disease and keeping your smile healthy long term.
Standard at Dunes, Not an Add-On
Some offices offer GBT as an optional upgrade. At Dunes Dental Studio, it’s part of our hygiene philosophy. We believe our patients deserve the most thorough and comfortable care we can give, so every patient gets it, and there’s no additional charge.
If your gums need extra support, Dr. Heather may also recommend laser therapy as part of your hygiene care.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not quite. A traditional cleaning relies mostly on what the hygienist can see. GBT starts by making biofilm visible, then removes it with warm water, AIRFLOW, and, when needed, EMS PIEZON ultrasonic technology. Unlike traditional ultrasonic instruments, EMS PIEZON uses precise, gentle vibrations to break up hardened buildup with your comfort in mind.
